The return of Armando Benedetti to the Government of Gustavo Petro

Benedetti faces a series of challenges in his new position, such as the global food crisis and climate change, which directly impact Colombia. However, he also has the opportunity to lead initiatives that promote sustainable agriculture, innovation and access to food for the most vulnerable communities.

This decision of the Petro Government has sparked many reactions. Some sectors have celebrated his return to government, highlighting his experience and management capacity. Others have expressed doubts about his suitability for the position, given the scandals that have marked his political career.

It should be noted that Benedetti left the Government a few months ago after the controversy over the alleged beatings of the nanny of the current director of Social Prosperity, Laura Sarabia, removing him from his position.

Likewise, Armando Benedetti was also being investigated for possible acts of corruption and irregularities in the financing of Gustavo Petro’s presidential campaign, after a series of audios in which the entry of illegal money into the campaign during the presidential race was discussed.

Benedetti’s future at FAO will depend on his ability to overcome the challenges he faces and to advance the Petro government’s agenda on food security and rural development. The success or failure of his administration will have a significant impact on the relationship between Colombia and the international organization.
