The Hamburg school authorities have presented guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in schools. These were developed by the AI competence center of the State Institute for Teacher Training and School Development Hamburg, the authority and the Artificial Intelligence Center Hamburg.

The school authorities announced this on Thursday. The “Guidelines for the use of AI systems in schools and lessons” are only available online on the website www.li.hamburg.de/ki available and revolved around the use of AI in teaching to promote learning, legal aspects and data protection issues.

School Senator: Teachers should test AI applications

“I would like to encourage all teachers to test and reflect on AI applications in class in order to enable students to use AI critically and competently,” said School Senator Ksenija Bekeris (SPD). She hoped that the guidelines would be viewed as a helpful tool for educational work.

The students’ own contribution should remain visible

According to the authority, generative AI models will be discussed there in terms of their functions and performance and their practical use in schools will be discussed. This involves, for example, the question of how tasks must be designed so that the students’ own work remains visible and can be distinguished from the content provided by the AI. The legal part deals, among other things, with the question of how performance when using AI can be evaluated and how the unauthorized use of AI applications should be dealt with in exams.

AI guidelines only available digitally

Bekeris emphasized: “Due to the dynamic developments, the guidelines were deliberately not published as PDF or printed material, but only digitally.” In this way, changes could be updated quickly and the guidelines could be successively supplemented with practical examples, possible applications and other materials for teachers.

School Committee: How are the schools digitally set up?

On Thursday afternoon, the citizens’ school committee was basically concerned with how well the city’s schools are digitally positioned. According to the school authorities, a lot has happened in the past year and a half, and there has even been recognition from the opposition parties CDU and Left. According to the authorities, almost all schools have good WiFi. On average, every third child has a tablet or laptop – enough to cover all those who don’t have their own device. Starting next school year, computer science will be a compulsory subject, but initially only in seven schools. It will then be introduced to everyone in 2025.
