According to local authorities, the bus was carrying more than fifty-five passengers. The accident happened on the night of Sunday to Monday on a dirt road in the remote region of Cajamarca. The bus came to a stop about 200 meters below the road at the edge of a river. Some occupants fell into the water and were dragged away.

An earlier assessment reported 23 deaths, but two people died upon arrival at a hospital. The victims include a six-year-old child and a newborn.

Many traffic accidents occur in Peru due to the poor condition of the roads, lack of traffic signs and poor enforcement of traffic rules. Last year, more than 3,100 people died in traffic in the country.
