In Nice, at Palazzo Crova, the tribute to Canuto Borelli: from today, April 9, the headquarters of “Art ‘900 Davide Lajolo Collection” it hosts a selection of works from Asti’s civic collections and private collections. Painter, sculptor, engraver, art critic, teacher, lawyer and professor of Law, Political Economy and Financial Science at the Giobert Institute in Asti, Borelli (Asti 1852-1928) was also a caricaturist for the periodical “Il Figaro” , published by Dresco from Asti. In Asti he was among the promoters and director of the evening school of Art and Crafts. The exhibition, curated by Andrea Rocco with Laurana Lajolo and Claudio Cerrato, presents two portraits of the artist from Asti signed in the early twentieth century by Antonio Rizzi. The works at Palazzo Crova testify to the fascination exerted on Borelli’s painting by the works of the Macchiaioli, the most important artistic movement of the nineteenth century in Italy to whom the exhibition «I Macchiaioli. The adventure of modern art ”(at Palazzo Mazzetti until May). Borelli studied at the Albertina Academy, a pupil of Enrico Gamba and Antonio Fontanesi. Another master of the artist was Michelangelo Pittatore, a painter from Asti active in the nineteenth century.

In the last quarter of the nineteenth century Borelli took part in national exhibitions in Milan (1878, 1879 and 1880) and Turin (1880). In 1884, the year of the personal exhibition in the former church of the Annunziata in Asti, in the national review of the Piedmontese capital Two tablets have been exhibited which can be admired at Palazzo Crova. These are two urban views of Asti: “Santa Caterina and Torre di San Secondo” and “Piazza del Seminario di Asti”: oils that testify to the mastery of colors and the use of gradations derived from the teachings of the Macchiaioli, as well as in the portrait by Don Gilardi «The taking of tobacco».
