Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso was handed a 20-second penalty at the end of the Australian Grand Prix as stewards ruled his driving had been “potentially dangerous” before George Russell’s crash. In the final stages of the race, the Mercedes driver came under Alonso, who slowed down a lot before a bend, and lost control, crashing into the barrier but without suffering any physical damage.
The accident led race management to close the race with the virtual safety car and at the end the stewards examined the available footage and spoke to both drivers. It was therefore decided to give Alonso a drive-through converted in 20 seconds, causing him to slip from sixth to eighth place, with Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) and Yuki Tsunoda (RB.) advancing in the standings.
