Hike tip

Podskalský Roháč is a table mountain in the southern part of Súľovské vrchy. Although it is a reserve, you can climb up here via a nature trail. It is a very nice half-day trip through the wonderful environment of the rocky city, with views to all directions. In early spring, you can also admire the pnikelece here.

More tips

Slovak Paradise: Among the very little known and visited places in the Slovak Paradise are certainly water bodies. And this despite the fact that it was the water element in the canyons that made the beautiful corner of Slovakia famous. But the quiet backwaters have their own genius loci and are definitely worth a visit. Henrich Tomáš invites you to the Hansjakubová and Blajzloch water reservoirs, which are very grateful in terms of landscape. You will also walk through the Veľká Bielá vody canyon, Kopanecké luky and the Mokrade Hnilec educational trail.

Bohunický and Jabloňovský Roháč – circuit from Bohunice

Little Fatra: According to Tomáš Deneš, running up to the crest of Mala Fatra from Šútov is one of the most beautiful “quick approaches” to the crest of this popular mountain range. Along the way, you will also see Šútovský waterfall, Mojžišov springs, and beautiful wide views await you on the ridge. You can stop at the renovated Chata pod Chlebom.

Tips for hiking with children

Súľovské vrchy is not only a very popular circuit of rocks to Súľovský hrad. My son Maťko and I went to the unmarked viewpoint Havrania skala above Kostolac. Be prepared for a steeper climb, but the views and the top rock are nice and we looked at other interesting rocks in the area. Although the path is outside the signs, we are in the 2nd level of protection, where it is allowed.

Studený potok consists of the famous Studený potok Waterfalls and Obrovský vodopád, which are admired by thousands of tourists in the vicinity of Hrebienko and on the way to Zamkovského chat. However, a hike along the stream from Tatranská Lesná is worthwhile, especially in spring, when there is a lot of water.

At the top of the trip, you can stop at Rainer’s cozy house in Starolesnianská polana. From here you can continue to Hrebienok and Starý Smokovec, or take a walk to Zamkovského chat next to the aforementioned Obrovský waterfall with a beautiful view of the Veľká Studena dolina.

Veľká Baňa is an unmarked hill above Bratislava’s Rača. On the way, we can stop with the children at the Lower Red Cross near a large shelter connected to a small lookout tower. From there, there is a short, steeper hike to the summit ridge with limited views. Near the top are the remains of a mine where limonite was mined.

A very attractive trip for children from a historical and geological point of view by Roman Matkovčík. In the foothills of the High Tatras, in the village of Gánovce, a petrified filling of the skull of a Neanderthal woman, imprints of vegetation and fossil teeth of a mammoth (mastodon) were found. Children can play in the geopark. We continue to the end of the village, where there are mineral springs – wells and a travertine pile.

In the northern part of the Little Carpathians, you can see several interesting things in the Dobrovodsk karst, which your children could also be excited about. Take them to Eagle Rocks, which is signposted locally. It is a nature reserve with a nice view. Our children were most interested in the Malá Pec and Veľká Pec caves. An educational trail leads to them. The grave of Baron von Wattenwyl also lies in the forest.

The weather

On Saturday, according to SHMÚ, there will be low, sometimes temporarily increased cloud cover. Extremely warm. The lowest night temperature 12 to 7, in the valleys sometimes 7 to 3 degrees.

On Sunday, it will be mostly partly cloudy and extremely warm again. The lowest night temperature 13 to 8, in the valleys around 6 degrees. The highest daily temperature 20 to 25, in the north in places 18 degrees.

On both days, strong and stormy winds will blow on the mountains above the forest zone.

Restrictions on hiking trails

According to the Center for Avalanche Prevention, there is a danger of avalanches on very steep slopes with a large additional mechanical load. As a result of continued warming, spontaneous avalanches on sunlit slopes can be expected on extremely steep slopes. The combination of slabs and pillows of blown snow that melts is very treacherous.

High and Western Tatras
HZS warns that the snow surface is hard to icy in the highest places. Complete winter equipment is required for hiking.

The red-marked trail from Hrebienk towards Studený dolín is closed, the detour takes the lower trail past Bilíková cottage.

The green TZCH Svorad – Spain – Lomnô (Lomné) and the green TZCH Proscekné – Borovianky valley in Chočské vrchy are poorly marked, with limited access. Bridges in Bobrovecká dolina, Hlboka dolina and Bystra dolina are torn down and in poor technical condition.

Here too, HZS recommends complete winter equipment for hiking. Due to the number of fallen trees, the red trail from Ludrova to Salatín is difficult to pass.

Little Fatra
From March 1, the spring seasonal closure of three hiking trails. The reason is the protection of animals in a sensitive period for the upbringing and rearing of the young of various species of birds and mammals. These are the routes:

Medziholie – Veľký Rozsutec – Medzirozsutce (red tourist sign) Obšívanka – Malé nocľahy (blue tourist sign) Vendovka – Malý Kriváň (blue tourist sign)

Lúčanská Malá Fatra
The HZS does not recommend movement in the upper part (from the snow line) of the Ferrata HZS on Martinská Hole – there is a risk of falling into the stream and the fall of the base slides from the steep sides of the via ferrata.

Great Fatra
Complete winter equipment is required for hiking. The snow cover starts from 1300 m above sea level Due to the influence of rain and warming even on the ridge, foundation avalanches can occur. Due to the previous rainy days, the TZCH below the snow line are wet, muddy and slippery. Expect old icy ground above the snow line.

Slovak Paradise
There are several fallen trees in the ravines and on the paths. The crossing of the Veľký Kyseľ gorge is particularly challenging, where due to the number of fallen trees, you have to count on a sufficient time reserve. A landslide occurred in the Tiesňava valley near Stratená, which damaged the entire hiking trail, including the safety chains. The Tiesňava valley is therefore closed for a long time.

Sour
The report of the PLA Kysuce informs that, as a result of the wind disaster, hiking trails in the Veľký Polom and Klokočovské skálie nature reserves are currently impassable. They recommend avoiding these routes until they are implemented.

Pieniny
The blue trail from Lesnice via Cerla to Červený Kláštor is difficult to pass.
