A Belgian woman and her four-year-old son were killed in a traffic accident in Berlin. This is reported by the local police. The woman’s husband and sister witnessed the accident, the four were in the German capital for a tourist trip.

The 41-year-old woman wanted to cross Leipziger Strasse, near Potsdamer Platz in central Berlin, on Saturday morning around 10 am with her son in a buggy. According to Bild, the 83-year-old driver of a Ford Mondeo wanted to pass a traffic jam on the right at that moment, on the cycle path and at an inappropriate speed. The man then hit the Belgian woman and her son head-on, before coming to a stop against two other cars.

Emergency services resuscitated the mother and child at the scene, but the woman died a few hours later in hospital from her injuries. The boy also did not survive despite emergency surgery: he died on Saturday night from his injuries.

The driver voluntarily took an alcohol test and was found to be sober. His driver’s license and car have already been confiscated. “The investigation into the exact cause of the accident is still ongoing,” police said. An expert will investigate the circumstances of the collision.
