The showdown in the League between the secretary Matteo Salvini and the Minister of Economic Development Giancarlo Giorgetti, which took place in the frame of the Chamber as part of a meeting of the federal council of the party, “gave birth” to a sort of armed truce awaiting the assembly on 11 and 12 December. The first round was therefore won by Salvini, who “put the rebels in line”. In addition to the two duelists, the third deputy secretary Lorenzo Fontana, the group leaders of the Chamber and Senate and the regional commissioners participated in the meeting. The governors are online on video, from Zaia to Fedriga. The secretary made it clear to everyone that the party line is given by him, not others. From taxes to work, which they want to defend in the maneuver, up to the new sovereign group to be built in Europe.
The distances between Giorgetti and Salvini
Giorgetti expresses the moderate wing of the party, an alternative to the “more attacking” line and often critical of the decisions taken by the government (of which the League itself is a part) of the secretary Salvini. Different characters, not to say opposites, as much an advocate of a pro-European line (functional to exploit in funding from the NRP) is the first, starting with a possible landing on the EPP, as the second is “sovereign”, which looks to the creation of an “identity, conservative and center-right” group, Eurosceptic, with the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, the Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Le Pen.
Few party leaders support the minister
Head of the Lega delegation to the government, the head of economic development pushed for the Carroccio to join the new Draghi executive, in the belief that remaining in the opposition would have precluded the party from participating in that mechanism of measures and reforms that accompany the arrival of the European Recovery Funds in Italy. Only a few party leaders – all nominated by Salvini and of Orthodox faith – find a place among the leaguers who look sympathetically at Giorgetti, while the appeal among local administrators remains strong, starting with the governors Luca Zaia, Attilio Fontana and Massimiliano Fedriga . Silvana Comaroli from Cremona is among the parliamentarians most in line with the Minister for Economic Development. And again Matteo Bianchi, a deputy who was defeated by the vote for Varese and his colleagues Dario Galli, former deputy economic minister, and Cristian Invernizzi, while the former undersecretary of the economy ministry Massimo Bitonci from the minister of Cazzago Brabbia. Raffaele Volpi, former Copasir number one, also has good relations with Giorgetti. Looking at Strasbourg among the League’s MEPs, the names associated with that of the League’s deputy secretary are those of Cinzia Bonfrisco and Gianna Gancia, always in line with the moderate European creed of which Giorgetti is the main interpreter in the League.
