Biosafety: experts, AI a source of risks but also benefits – News

Artificial Intelligence is a tool that, in addition to representing a risk, can bring a benefit to global biosecurity and it is important that there is continuous monitoring and sharing of inputs on how to deal on a practical level with the widespread diffusion of AI tools on biosafety. These are the conclusions of the summit of 38 scientists called to express their opinion on the impact of technology on global biosecurity which was held in recent days in Trieste.

The meeting, organized at the Ictp by InterAcademy partnership, a body under the auspices of UNESCO which brings together over 150 scientific academies, was aimed at implementing a simulation of how a scientific consultancy body could serve the UN convention which bans weapons biological and toxin weapons, the Biological weapons convention (Bwc) could operate. Equipping the BWC, a convention that will be 50 years old next year, with such a body, already established in the other two UN entities that prohibit weapons of mass destruction (chemical and nuclear), has been an open topic since the signing of the convention itself.

For Ljupčo Gjorgjinski, facilitator for BWC on science and technology issues and consultant to IAP, the experiment “was a success. We urgently need a scientific body so that competent and independent scientists study these complex issues and give their recommendations to political decision makers around the world so that the planet continues to be a safe place.” Obviously, “remaining careful regarding the risks”, he concluded.
