Blinken and Yang Jiechi talk about five sensitive issues on stage | Traceability of the Chinese Communist Party virus | Five sensitive issues | Taiwan

[NTD News June 12, 2021 Beijing time]US Secretary of State Blincoln had a telephone conversation with Yang Jiechi, Director of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Communist Party of China, on June 11, discussing five sensitive issues including Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the origin of the Chinese Communist Party virus. After the meeting, the two sides issued separate statements, but they still said their own words, showing that the two sides have serious differences.

On the same day, the U.S. State Department issued a statement saying that Brinken and Yang Jiechi discussed a comprehensive review of the U.S. policy on North Korea, and emphasized the need for U.S.-China cooperation on the issue of the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. The two sides also discussed common global challenges, including Iran, Myanmar and the climate crisis.

The statement said that Brinken emphasized the importance of cooperation and transparency on the issue of the traceability of the Chinese Communist Party virus, and said that the WHO expert team needs to conduct a second phase of investigation in China.

Brinken particularly expressed concern about the deterioration of democratic norms in Hong Kong and the ongoing genocide and crimes in Xinjiang. He also urged Beijing to “stop its pressure on Taiwan” and resolve the cross-strait issue peacefully.

During the call, Brinken brought up several cases of US and Canadian citizens being arbitrarily detained in China and prohibited from leaving the country, and urged China to immediately release those who were “wrongly detained”.

The statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Communist Party of China is quite different from that of the United States. It is about investigating the origin of the Chinese Communist Party virus, the deterioration of democracy in Hong Kong, the genocide of ethnic minorities, the pressure on Taiwan, and the arbitrary detention and prohibition of foreign citizens leaving the country. Not mentioned explicitly.

The Chinese statement focuses on the importance of Sino-US cooperation. Yang Jiechi said that the U.S. should work with China to “push Sino-U.S. relations back on the right track of development.” China urges the U.S. to abide by the one-China principle and handle Taiwan-related issues prudently and properly.

Regarding the traceability of the CCP virus that the US is actively promoting, Yang Jiechi claimed that the US should not politicize the traceability issue. It is also said that the United States fabricated and spread the absurd story of “the Wuhan laboratory leaked the new crown virus (CCP virus)”, and China is seriously concerned about this.

In fact, since the outbreak, Beijing has been reluctant to cooperate with the United States and the World Health Organization in the investigation of the origin of the virus, and accused Washington of “political manipulation to shift responsibility,” but it did not provide any evidence.

This call was the first time Yang Jiechi spoke in Brinken after the US and China broke up during the Alaska talks in March. During this period, U.S.-China relations have further deteriorated, and the U.S. has shown a tough stance especially on the origin of the CCP virus.

U.S. President Biden issued a statement on May 26, asking U.S. intelligence agencies to work hard to collect information and report to him whether the CCP virus came from an animal source or a laboratory accident within 90 days. He also stated that the United States will continue to work with like-minded partners around the world to urge the CCP to participate in international investigations and provide all relevant data and evidence.

Brinken told the American media Axios on HBO on June 6 that the Biden administration is determined to “investigate the root cause” of the CCP virus epidemic and hold the CCP accountable.

Blinken said that the CCP “claims to be a responsible international actor” and must “do everything it can to provide all the information it has to ensure that we can hopefully prevent this from happening again.”

The day before Brinken’s call with Yang Jiechi (June 10), Biden and British Prime Minister Johnson held bilateral talks. After the meeting, the two issued a joint statement expressing their support for the World Health Organization (WHO) to conduct further investigations into the origin of the Chinese Communist virus.

On June 11, Biden attended the G7 summit in Cornwall, UK. CNN reported that the support of the United Kingdom and other members of the G7 will add weight to Biden’s push to re-examine the source of the virus, including a new examination of laboratory leak theory.

Australia has also been invited to participate in the seven-nation summit. Australian Prime Minister Morrison has been asking for a transparent investigation of the origin of the Chinese Communist Party virus. The Voice of America stated that international calls for the CCP to fully cooperate in the investigation of the source of the virus are increasing, reflecting that Western allies are uniting more widely against Beijing.

The U.S. Senate passed the “American Innovation and Competition Act” on June 8. The bill aims to comprehensively enhance U.S. competitiveness in response to the challenges of the Chinese Communist Party. The Office of the United States Trade Representative plans to set up a “trade picket” to correct the CCP’s unfair practices in trade with the United States.

President Biden, who is currently attending the summit of the seven nations in the UK, will also promote coordination among the heads of state participating in the meeting to jointly respond to the challenges from the Chinese Communist Party. French President Macron issued a statement before the summit stating that the CCP is “a systemic adversary, a partner in global issues, and a competitor.”

EU leaders also announced at a meeting before the summit that the CCP is a “systematic competitor.”
