Million-Dollar Scam Uncovered in Short-Term Property Rental Business

Criminals are becoming more sophisticated in their strategies, taking advantage of technological advances to manipulate their victims and perfect their scams. This was the case for businessman Shray Goel, 35, and his partner Shaunik Raheja, 34, who were accused of carrying out a million-dollar scam in the short-term property rental business.

The scheme allegedly involved using vacation rentals across 10 states in the country to cancel customers’ reservations and manipulate victims. The suspects reportedly used false client lists and online vacation rental platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo for fraudulent bookings. They targeted those who did not pay the highest price per room, particularly discriminating against black customers, and ultimately seized millions of dollars.

The defendants currently face 13 federal charges, including double booking scam, deceptive business practices, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and identity theft. Each faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. Martin Estrada, United States Attorney, revealed that the criminals made over 10,000 reservations in almost 100 properties in 10 states and took $8.5 million USD, while also allegedly discriminating against the victims on racial grounds.

This case highlights the need for individuals to protect themselves on the Internet and use safe sites to avoid possible scams. With criminals becoming increasingly sophisticated in their methods, it is important for the public to remain vigilant and informed about potential threats.
