The Fifth National Rice Census revealed strategic and updated statistical information on the Mechanized Rice Production Units (irrigated and mechanized dryland) and their producers in Colombia for the year 2023 in order to support decision-making in the economic, social and environmental spheres. of the rice sector.

The results of harvested area, production and yield of mechanized rice are presented at the national level and for the 23 producing departments. The planted area for the two semesters of the year is additionally presented disaggregated by rice-growing areas, department, by month and by crop production system.

National total by Departments

The area planted in mechanized rice for 2023 was 589,848 hectares, the largest planted area was recorded in the department of Casanare with a share of 35.0% (206,689 ha), followed by the department of Tolima with a share of 17.1%. (100,589 ha) and the department of Meta with a share of 14.7% (86,449 ha) (table 2 and graph 2).

The harvested area was 568,455 hectares in total; The departments with the largest harvested areas were Casanare, Tolima and Meta with 208,331 ha, 93,584 ha and 85,805 ha respectively. National production of green paddy rice was 3,188,267 tons.

The department that recorded the highest production during this period was Casanare with a share of 34.1% (1,086,152 tons), followed by the departments of Tolima with a share of 21.5% (685,576 tons), Meta with a share of 13.9% (442,849 tons) and Huila with a share of 7.9% (252,878 tons).

Regarding yield during 2023, the departments with the highest average yield were Tolima and Huila (7.3 t/ha each); followed by Valle del Cauca (6.7 t/ha) and La Guajira (6.6 t/ha).

First half results 2023 – area, production and performance

For the first half of 2023, the department with the largest area planted with mechanized rice was Casanare with 187,789 ha, followed by the Resto Departamentos group with 90,158 ha. The largest area harvested during the same period of 2023 occurred in the Resto Departments group with 47,544 hectares, followed by the department of Tolima with 45,329 hectares.

Results second half of 2023

For the second half of 2023, the Rest of the Departments were the group that presented the largest area planted with mechanized rice with 71,007 hectares, followed by the department of Tolima with 49,893 hectares.

The largest area harvested during the same analysis period was presented by the department of Casanare with 189,840 ha, followed by the Resto Departments group with 98,659 ha.

Regarding the production of mechanized rice in the second half of 2023, the department with the highest production of green paddy rice was Casanare with 977,265 tons, followed by the Resto Departamentos group with 458,790 tons.

For its part, for the yield of green paddy rice in the same period, the highest record was presented by the department of Huila with 7.4 t/ha, followed by Tolima with 7.2 t/ha.

The planted area in the first half of 2023 was 413,644 ha; The area that registered the largest area corresponded to Llanos with a share of 66.0% (273,146 ha), followed by the Central zone with 17.6% (72,820 ha) and Bajo Cauca with 8.3% (34,304 ha).

The planted area in the second half of 2023 was 176,204 ha; The area that registered the largest area corresponded to Centro with a share of 40.4% (71,239 ha), followed by the Llanos area with a share of 24.4% (42,915 ha) and Bajo Cauca with 17.9% (31,482 ha). ha).

Balance of losses

For the first half of 2023, a total of 2,804 lost hectares were recorded. The most affected area was Llanos with 1,603 hectares lost, followed by Bajo Cauca with 1,066 hectares. The main causes of losses in this period were floods and droughts.

The historical series for area planted with mechanized rice of the main rice-growing departments in the country for the first semester (series years 2010-2023) illustrates the distribution of plantings, which for the first semester of 2023 were located in the departments of Meta with 68,185 hectares (16.5%), Casanare with 187,789 hectares (45.4%), Tolima with 50,695 hectares (12.3%), Huila with 16,817 hectares (4.1%) and the Rest of the Departments with 90,158 hectares (21 .8%).

Second semester 2023

It presents the historical series 2010-2023 for the area planted with mechanized rice in the second semester for the main rice departments. This illustrates the distribution of the crops, which were located in the departments of Meta with 18,265 hectares (10.4%), Casanare with 18,900 hectares (10.7%), Tolima with 49,893 hectares (28.3% ), Huila with 18,139 hectares (10.3%) and the Rest of the Departments with 71,007 hectares (40.3%).

The census covered all the existing mechanized rice areas in the country, in which information was obtained on the use and exploitation of the land, ownership of the production unit and sociodemographic characteristics of the producer, as well as the area, production, yield, variety, use of certified seed, or technological level of rice cultivation and machinery, and the use of technical advice. Likewise, information was collected regarding the type of credit, harvest insurance and the media with which the producer is kept informed regarding the technological advances of the crop.
