To advance the restoration of mangrove ecosystems affected by anthropogenic activities located in the El Encanto de Los Manglares de Bajo Baudó Regional Integrated Management District, Codechocó restored 435 hectares through the establishment of 1,087,500 propagules which will contribute to the recovery of the ecosystem services of the intervened area.

Propagules are a type of asexual reproduction in plants, through which new plants and individualized organs are obtained. The tissues of the separated portion must recover the condition of meristems to produce the entire set of organs of the plant.

The execution of the project had the support of the community councils located in the DRMI corresponding to Concosta, Cuevita, Pilizá, Terrón, Usaragá, Sivirú, Purricha and Virudó.

The actions aimed at mitigating degradation rates in the area focused on a training and environmental awareness process aimed at 300 people from the community on topics such as culture and participation for environmental management; construction, maintenance and management of nurseries; establishment and management of ecological restoration; identification and monitoring of areas degraded by anthropogenic activities, among others.

Arnold Rincon López, general director of Codechocó, assured that the entity is advancing in the protection of the ecosystems of the Pacific Choco region in coordination with the community. He reiterated that through this initiative 1,110 people were linked and livelihood opportunities were generated for their families. On the other hand, he added that the planting process carried out in the DRMI contributes to the absorption of CO2 and the reduction of greenhouse gases.

During this restoration process, women occupied a relevant place, since of the total number of people who participated, 80% were women heads of household and are dedicated to the extraction and marketing of Piangua.

With several Pianguera women, through other conservation strategies, the entity has been working to protect the mangrove ecosystems and the marine organisms that live there, which are the basis for strengthening the local economy of Bajo Baudó.
