There continue to be reactions to President Gustavo Petro’s complaint of an alleged “constitutional rupture” in the Prosecutor’s Office and the Attorney General’s Office due, according to him, to the latest events where his chancellor Álvaro Leyva has been suspended and it is intended, according to the president, “to prosecute criminally to the president of Ecopetrol and the superintendent of public services “, in what would be, according to the president, a blow to his administration.

Given this, the representative to the Chamber for Antioquia, Alejandro Toro, communicated on his social networks that they will take the current situation to international bodies, which they consider a “violation of several human rights and democratic principles.”

For the congressman there are a series of aspects in which it is determined that if “there is an institutional rupture”, they list for example: “suspension of government officials and investigations and raids”, among other topics.

“We will file a complaint before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, together with several congressmen, for the institutional breakdown in Colombia manifested in: 1- Suspension of Government Officials; 2- Investigations and Raids; 3- Illegal pressure on witnesses with the aim of incriminating the President Gustavo Petro; 4- Criminalization of Political Support; 5- Use of Institutions for Political Persecution,” says the congressman’s post.

Later in the letter, Toro assured that they will request an impartial investigation into the reported events.

“We consider that there are violations of several human rights and democratic principles: The right to justice and due process; freedom of association and expression; the right to participate in the government and public life of your country,” he added:

“Given these facts, we ask the IACHR to: 1- Admit this complaint and examine it in accordance with its procedures. 2. Carry out an impartial investigation into the reported facts. 3. Urge the Colombian State to guarantee respect for democratic principles and human rights, including the right to a fair trial, freedom of expression and association, and political participation.”
