CAGLIARI. The anti-Covid vaccination campaign in Sardinia continues. In a note from the press office of the regional council he noted that in February it closed with 211,600 doses administered, most of them (156,000) third doses to which more than 15,600 first doses and 40,000 recalls are added. Overall, 663,500 administrations have been carried out since the beginning of the year, of which 515,954 booster doses and 65,000,000 first doses. A total of 3,697,000 doses have been administered on the island since the start of the vaccination campaign.
Sardinia is among the top six regions for vaccination coverage: 84.2% of the population has completed the primary cycle and to this is added a further 2.1% of people who have received at least one dose. Since yesterday, vaccinations have also started on the island with the fourth dose, a campaign aimed at the target of immunosuppressed subjects (about 28 thousand in the region), people who find themselves in this particular condition due to a disease or following specific treatments .
The first vaccinations with the new drug Novavax (Nuvaxovid) also started: out of 304 first doses administered between February 28 and March 1, 17% were performed with the first protein subunit vaccine in circulation, a technology used for decades in the production of vaccines, now also available in Sardinia. On Sunday the first 27,900 doses of the Novavax vaccine arrived on the island, of which a further 57,300 doses are expected by the second half of March.

As for the fourth dose, our vaccination hubs and centers continue to be at the forefront even in this phase, aimed at the most vulnerable whose protection against the virus has always been a priority “.
“Nuvaxovid – declares the regional health councilor, Mario Nieddu, regarding the new vaccine – has several advantages, in particular linked to a less extreme cold chain compared to messenger RNA vaccines, an aspect that therefore makes it more manageable. The hope is that the use of a technology that has already been known for some time can overcome the resistance of those who harbored skepticism towards the vaccines available so far. The vaccination campaign has already achieved excellent results, but the danger is not yet behind us and even one more vaccine represents a victory ”.
