The children’s carnival procession in the north of Duisburg is known far beyond the city limits and is considered one of the largest of its kind. Children have always been the focus here. At peak times, over 100,000 visitors came to the train route; last year there were around 35,000.
Some apparently became aggressive. Train participants report being pushed, girls being filmed up their skirts, and the child princess is said to have been sexually insulted and camels were repeatedly thrown back at the train participants. That’s why there were no advertisements. However, several carnival clubs threatened a boycott if the train route was not changed this year, reports organizer Axel Koch.
Club counters criticism
The new train route no longer runs through the Marxloh district because there was a very narrow passage there that encouraged crowding, said Koch. He firmly rejects criticism that relocating the route would simply give up an entire district. “We have been involved in the north of Duisburg for decades and wouldn’t do this if we didn’t think it was worth living here.” The train now turns directly after the A59 bridge onto Buschstraße and ends at the Jägerstraße roundabout.
