The guerrilla of the National Liberation Army (ELN) expressed this Friday its support for the proposal of Colombian President Gustavo Petro to convene a national constituent assembly if Congress does not approve his reforms.
The ELN, which is in peace talks with the Government, stated: “People’s power is the essence of our new nation project,” which is why the participation of society is one of the points included in that negotiation, and in that sense it supports the proposal made by Petro on March 15, which has caused a deep controversy in the country.

“We understand the announcement of a national constituent assembly as an effort aimed at democratization and construction of a good life for all,” said that guerrilla in a statement.
For the ELN, “the constituent process must really bring together the Colombian people, as an exercise of direct democracy” that channels the necessary changes in the country.
To achieve this, they consider it necessary to “democratize the political system, recover the battered national sovereignty, guarantee access to fundamental rights for the entire population” and other demands.
