On Wednesday, Emilie was walking to her car after a doctor’s appointment at the Mosan medical center when she suddenly heard someone screaming. “I heard someone. He shouted ‘Leave me alone, leave me alone’,” she explains to the Walloon newspaper.

When she turned around, she saw a woman curled up in a ball on the ground. “A man was hitting her. Her face was bleeding. She tried to protect herself and still held her baby. I saw two people on the sidewalk across the street, but no one was moving,” she says in disbelief.

Without a doubt, the 33-year-old decided to intervene. She threw herself at the man to help the woman who was lying down. “He was twice my size and quite strong. But I don’t know why, I just went without thinking. I pulled him by the hood but when he saw someone pulling him, he elbowed me. I took the baby in my arms, turned around and he hit me twice in the face. He took off and I just stood there, shocked.”

Nobody moved

According to the Liège woman, several people were watching, but no one moved. “Yes, there were people watching, I shouted, I called the police but no one did anything. I think that’s what shocked me the most. Nowadays, no one dares to come to the rescue of a woman and her baby who are in danger. I can understand that it’s scary, but I couldn’t resist. I don’t understand how this can happen.”
