The heads of state and government of the European Union reached an agreement faster than expected at a summit in Brussels on Thursday on a financial support package of 50 billion euros for Ukraine. This was announced by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stopped opposing the agreement.
“We have a deal. All 27 leaders agreed to an additional support package of 50 billion euros for Ukraine within the European budget,” Michel reported on X. “The EU takes responsibility and leadership to support Ukraine. We know what is at stake.”

In December, the heads of state and government met to discuss the agreement, which will apply until 2027, but Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban was reluctant at the time. He offered little room for openings in recent days and weeks, but closed in on Thursday.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reacted very enthusiastically to the approval. “This will strengthen Ukraine’s long-term economic and financial stability,” it said.
