Bellavista Swamp Baudó Delta
Wetlands, fragile and promising ecosystem.
Biogeographic Chocó has a great abundance of wetlands, especially in the middle and lower part of the numerous hydrographic basins that cross its territory. The lower and middle Atrato, for example, has reported about 960,000 hectares corresponding to wetland ecosystems, represented mainly by swamps and flooded forests, which are distributed across the alluvial plain of the Atrato River (Corpourabá and Codechocó, 2006).
In the same department of Chocó there are two more large basins, the Baudó and the San Juan, both with two deltas composed of important wetlands, for which both deltas have been studied to be considered Ramsar sites.
In Chocó, progress has been made in actions aimed at the conservation and sustainable management of biodiversity, but the current and future trend of habitats remains worrying due to the accelerated process of deforestation, deterioration and transformation of them.
