Brussel –

In the night from Friday to Saturday, a firefighter became the victim of senseless aggression by a patient. The man was punched, has facial bruises and a chapped lip. He is incapacitated.

In the night from Friday to Saturday around 3:45 am, one of the Brussels firefighters became the victim of a senseless aggression by a patient. A 112 ambulance was commandeered by the police that night to take care of a drunk man who had fallen in Kolenmarktstraat. The injured person was then transferred to St. John’s Hospital.

Upon arrival at the emergency room, the man suddenly and without any reason threw a punch in the firefighter’s face. The scene was filmed by security cameras. After examination and the necessary care, the man was transferred to the police station. The firefighter has facial bruises and a chapped lip and is unfit for work. “He has filed a complaint with the competent services. The general management also reports as an injured party and will file civil proceedings,” says fire department spokesperson Walter Derieuw.

“There is little we can do against such a case, but we do see that the figures of aggression against firefighters are increasing slightly. We have taken various initiatives to this end, such as organizing training for firefighters and setting up procedures, such as calling the police in a turbulent environment. We have also launched a campaign to make the firefighter profession better known.”
