Former paramilitary chief Salvatore Mancuso returns to Colombia deported from the US

Former paramilitary chief Salvatore Mancuso returned to Colombia on Tuesday after being deported from the United States, according to Migración Colombia. Mancuso, who was in federal custody in the US after being extradited by Colombia in 2008 and found guilty of drug trafficking, finished serving his sentence in 2020 but remained in custody until his return to Colombian territory was determined.

Upon landing, Mancuso completed immigration procedures and was placed at the disposal of the National Police. He also signed a document accepting his appointment as a peace manager, a position announced by President Gustavo Petro in July 2023 as part of his “Total Peace” policy to address the country’s past armed conflicts. Mancuso, a former livestock businessman and head of the paramilitary United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC), is expected to face multiple criminal charges.

In April 2023, Mancuso was indicted for over 4,000 crimes involving more than 6,000 victims, including homicides, forced displacement, and forced disappearances. The Petro Government aims to ensure justice for victims and work towards non-repetition by bringing Mancuso back and appointing him as a peace manager.

Despite his past involvement in violent crimes, Mancuso has expressed willingness to contribute to the peace agenda. In a letter published in 2023, he stated his readiness to fulfill the tasks assigned by the national government. As Mancuso faces judicial processes in Colombia, his return marks a significant development in the country’s efforts towards reconciliation and justice for victims of violence.
