The suspects are two Afghan men who allegedly wanted to carry out an attack with firearms near the parliament in Sweden in response to the Quran burnings in that country. They were arrested in Gera, Thuringia, the German court said.

The duo are said to have received instructions from a splinter group of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization as early as the summer of 2023. The intention was to target police officers and civilians. The suspected jihadists are said to have searched the internet and made several attempts to obtain weapons, but were unsuccessful. Both men are said to have raised money for IS in Germany in the past.

They will be brought before the investigating judge on Tuesday and Wednesday. Investigators accuse them of membership of or support for a terrorist organization abroad, conspiracy with intent to commit a crime and violations of the Foreign Trade and Payments Act.
