Giovanni Toti: “Great center for the elections? I don’t see great competition. It is necessary to talk to Sala, Giorgetti and Di Maio “

Between metaverse and sustainable mobility, after the episodes in Mantua and Trieste the Alphabet of the Future made a stop in Genoa: from the Foyer of the Carlo Felice Theater, mobility and sustainability were discussed in particular. On the occasion, the director of La Stampa Massimo Giannini interviewed the president of the Liguria Region and leader of “Cambiamo!” Giovanni Toti, discussing the recent political upheavals and his political future, between the Great Center and potential allies.

Is the appointment with the crisis, after the showdown between Draghi and Conte, only postponed?
Yesterday something grotesque more than politically significant took place. We danced for two days with a Parliament stuck waiting for postponements for a measure when the world seemed to fall. Then an important political secretary went to Draghi, delivered a letter, the premier told him “we will let you know” and we went on. He does not worry about the government crisis, he worries about the seriousness of the political class and of the parties that have the majority.

This wastes the prime minister’s time and polish. Speaking of the seriousness of the missing parties: is that why you want to found another one?
(laughs). If we talk about “marketing” I do not see fearful competitors on the supermarket shelves, even if the history and the roots of the parties have its weight. More than a political party, I would like to offer a contribution to the political agenda of the country and see if we manage to aggregate and if we manage to convert some party that is a bit lost onto the path of seriousness, and that the culture of the opposition is lost, instead of a culture of government.

The names of possible allies for this project? Room?
Excluding the names, good mayors like Sala must be interlocutors. I hear things that Calenda can share, other than she often says she wants to be alone. Italia Viva has held consistent positions in Parliament, even if Renzi tends to be wavering. Within the center-right they see excellent leaguers in the Draghi government: from Giorgetti and Garavaglia. And also inside Forza Italia. We need a patrol of ministers that works, all these names are possible, indeed necessary, interlocutors to reconstruct.

And Di Maio? Did you do well to get out of the M5S?
Di Maio in the past has said some things that I categorically do not agree with. But I appreciate the fact that a political leader who comes from a revolutionary movement that has joined the government realizes that even a revolutionary movement must get its hands dirty with mediation, the art of the attainable. He is a present minister who has shown adaptability. I told him we’ll see you and we’ll talk about it. He needs to understand what he thinks today of the waste-to-energy plant in Rome, of the regasification plant in Puglia, so much damage to his Movement when he was the leader.

Elections 2023. Dragons still in politics? Or is hers the party of Dragons without Dragons?
Draghi was the judicial curator of this legislature, so that in a moment of crisis it was possible to reach the end. He is now a technician on loan to politics. If he wants to do politics in any other way, he will let him know. It is enough for me to grasp the fact that he has restored dignity and rules to the country abroad: if we can keep this paradigm, Draghi has given it to him.
