A week to reach it and thus be able to ensure the most awaited stage of the Giro d’Italia, which on Saturday started from Turin – it must be said, with so many people on the streets – a worthy setting for the public. Yes, because it is clear from the first days following the pink race, that May 22 will be a crucial junction of this cycling adventure.
The Marostica-Zoncolan, arriving at high altitude from the Sutrio side, will be the first great mountain of the race. It will arrive between two walls of snow, laboriously removed from the road in recent weeks, and the organizers want to try to bring as much public as possible to the side of the road in the final three hard kilometers.
In recent days, the patron of the Friulian stages Enzo Cainero has intensified the meetings at the highest levels with the Prefecture and the Police Headquarters. Having said that the region’s remaining in the yellow zone will be the basis on which to organize the supporters plan, in recent days the chances of a green light have increased.
Because there is a precedent, heavy: last October, with Friuli already struggling with the resurgence of the pandemic and in fact the beginning of the second wave, on Monte di Ragogna, fulcrum of the Udine-San Daniele fraction, the controlled, spaced access, in short, with maximum security, for over two thousand people. Well-defined areas and supervised by Civil Protection volunteers, spectators welcomed only by booking and after measuring their body temperature.
Here, on the Kaiser the aim is to do the same and thus to get up to three thousand people from Piazzale Moro in the last three kilometers, supervised by the men of the Civil Protection, all vaccinated. “We want to try to give an adequate public frame to a great event, an unmissable postcard for our territory”, explains the councilor for tourism of the Municipality of Sutrio, Daniele Straulino.
He is a policeman and in recent days he carried out an inspection at high altitude with his colleagues from the Police Headquarters. On Friday in Udine at the Police Headquarters, then, we will sit at a table and make a final decision, also because all the booking and recruitment operations of volunteers must be organized quickly.
But a certain optimism begins to filter through. Fortunately, the numbers of the pandemic have improved compared to a few weeks ago and above all the task force set up by the organization in the Friulian stages in October, when the health situation was much worse, had proved to hold up well.
But where will the spectators be positioned? Car parked in Piazzale Moro, that of the chairlifts at high altitude, where, moreover, most of the spaces will be occupied by the means of the powerful organizational machine, and on the way to settle in the spaces cleared of snow. The start of the opening of the cable cars from Ravascletto and Piazzale Moro, with limited numbers and with maximum safety, would help a lot. On the Zoncolan, with snow, at the time of Covid, to see the Giro. Yes, come on, maybe it can be done.
