The former president of Guatemala Otto Pérez Molina was placed under house arrest and on Wednesday night he left the jail where he had been since 2015 accused of corruption, after paying two bail bonds of just over a million dollars, his defense lawyer told reporters on Thursday.
In late 2022, Pérez, a 73-year-old retired general, was sentenced to 16 years in prison after a court found him guilty of corruption crimes during his tenure.
Pérez Molina was in prison for several corruption cases, including the widely known La Línea case, in which he was accused of directing a criminal structure that was responsible for collecting bribes from importers through customs.
Pérez Molina was also sentenced in the State Cooptation case to 12 years in prison, but these were commutable, so in this case he paid a financial bond of $38,000.
The former president is on conditional release, is prohibited from leaving the country and must attend the Public Ministry every 30 days for telematic control, his lawyer César Calderón told journalists.
