He posed as the distant relative who sent suitcases and defrauded his victim out of $2,000 – Diario La Página

Whether out of ingenuity, good faith or ambition, dozens of Salvadorans fall every day for the tricks of people who pretend to be a distant relative who, after several years, suddenly appears loaded with suitcases, which in order to remove them you have to make a deposit of a large sum of money.

This is what Yaqueline del Carmen Girón Gálvez did, for which she was denounced and captured this Saturday by order of the Attorney General of the Republic.

According to the complaint, the woman contacted her victim posing as a relative who needed to send some bags, but in order to get them out of customs, she needed to deposit $2,000.

The victim made the deposit and did not hear from the fraudster again, so she filed the complaint with the respective authorities. “After the victim paid the full amount through a bank transfer, the accused did not respond to the messages again,” said the Prosecutor’s Office.

The authorities have warned on other occasions that this type of deception is usually carried out by WhatsApp. The scammer contacts his victim by dialing a random number and pretends to be a relative who has started to return. However, he allegedly travels with excess baggage and is charged thousands of dollars by the airline to continue the trip. It is then that he asks his victim to make the deposit. Once the transaction is made, the alleged relative disappears and blocks the victim’s phone number.

“The @FGR_SV issued an arrest warrant against Yaqueline Girón for fraud. According to the complaint, he posed as a relative of the victim and made him believe that he was sending him some suitcases for which he had to pay $2,000 dollars to receive them, “added the FGR.
