Is Betania’s fish production at risk?

The Secretariat of Agriculture and Mining of the Government of Huila issued a statement of calm regarding fish production in Betania, highlighting that, despite the low levels of flow in the country’s reservoirs, the activity is not threatened.

Resolution 40619 of October 14, 2023, which adopts transitional measures for electricity exports during the El Niño Phenomenon 2023-2024has been key to maintaining optimal water levels in Betania, necessary for the development of fish farming activity.

According to the technical secretary of the Huila Fish Chain, Edison Javier Henao, although the country’s reservoirs present worrying levels for energy generation, it has been guaranteed that the Betania reservoir remains above 60%, which ensures production. fish farming without risks.

Unquestionably we have to recognize that the country’s reservoirs are at a quite critical level for the issue of energy generation.but on the other hand there is some peace of mind in productive terms taking into account the measures defined by the Ministry of Mines and Energy, on October 14, 2023, which establishes that the level of the Betania reservoir must be maintained above 60%, and that guarantees that fish production does not present risk.”

Henao also noted that the country is transitioning towards the first rainy period of 2024, which will help increase water supply and gradually normalize reservoir levels.

The call to society is to take prompt actions on the rational use of natural resources, given the impact of global warming.
