The Caribbean Community (Caricom) meets this Monday in Jamaica to hold a high-level conference on the crisis in Haiti. The meeting, which is attended by the Secretary of State of the United States, Antony Blinken, and the Prime Minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness, aims “advance discussions on support for Haiti, as well as the path forward for Haitian governance”according to Caricom.
The crisis in Haiti has intensified in recent weeks, with armed gangs controlling much of the territory and spreading terror among the population. The assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021 aggravated the situation, and violence has been increasing since then.
In September 2023, the United Nations Security Council approved the sending of a multinational mission led by Kenya to control the gangs and facilitate the holding of elections. However, the mission has not yet materialized.
Secretary of State Blinken will present a proposal at the conference to “accelerate a political transition in Haiti” by creating a “broad-based independent presidential college” and the deployment of a «multinational security support mission».
The closure of the country’s main port, the extension of the state of emergency in the capital and the recent coordinated attack against government buildings in Port-au-Prince are just some examples of the serious crisis that Haiti is going through.
