Former Federal Police Commander Luis Cárdenas Palomino has been released by a federal judge in the “Fast and Furious” case, due to lack of evidence presented by the Attorney General’s Office (FGR).
Judge Karina Almada Rábago determined that the FGR did not present sufficient evidence to prosecute Cárdenas Palomino in connection to the alleged allowance of clandestine entry of weapons and military materials into Mexico, believed to be part of a US government operation to track down criminal organizations.
Despite the release in this case, Cárdenas Palomino still faces another process related to the alleged torture of four members of the Los Zodiaco kidnapping gang. He will not be released immediately as a result.
This marks the second high-ranking official of the defunct Federal Police to be released in the “Fast and Furious” case, as former commissioner Facundo Rosas was also released in July 2022 after a court revoked his formal imprisonment.
Cárdenas Palomino’s fate remains uncertain as the legal proceedings against him continue.
