On January 22, a devastating landslide in Zhenxiong County, Yunnan Province, resulted in the burial of 18 houses and 47 missing people. The leader of China, Xi Jinping, immediately issued important instructions, calling for swift and all-encompassing rescue efforts. The directives emphasized prioritizing the search and rescue of missing persons and minimizing casualties, as well as preventing any potential secondary disasters.

The government’s swift response to the disaster was evident as a multitude of national and local departments, including armed police, firefighting, mine rescue, among others, rapidly mobilized to Zhenxiong County. The Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Emergency Management swiftly allocated a significant sum of 50 million yuan in central natural disaster relief funds to support the relief efforts in Zhenxiong County. The China Geological Survey, the Geological Disaster Technical Guidance Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources, and the Yunnan Provincial Department of Natural Resources all joined forces to provide crucial technical expertise in the rescue and recovery operations.

The rescue scene tells a tale of unwavering dedication and unity in the face of a daunting disaster. More than 1,000 rescue forces, including firefighters and search and rescue dogs, alongside an arsenal of vehicles and machinery, have been deployed to the disaster zone, battling snow and cold temperatures as they work tirelessly to locate and rescue trapped individuals.

Despite the challenging climate, rescue operations have continued throughout the night, with 11 missing individuals rescued by 22:00 on the day of the landslide. The efforts are ongoing, as the remaining missing persons are being sought with utmost determination.

In the aftermath of the disaster, the proper resettlement of disaster-affected individuals has been taking place. Immediate support in the form of shelter, food, and clothing is being provided to ensure the displaced population is cared for and can recover.
