The summer spring day ended on a bad note on Saturday in Savelberg in Balen. A dog that had killed 22 chickens was shot and is now walking around with a bullet in its body. The chickens’ owner claims the shot didn’t come from him.
Daniel from Balen regularly visits friends in Savelberg with his family and his dogs. One of the dogs, a 1-year-old American Akita named Whiskey, crawled under the fence on Wednesday and made its way into the garden of two houses away. “He had killed 22 chickens there,” says Daniel. “A day later we had a conversation with the owner of the chickens. He wanted 600 euros in cash as compensation, but I refused. I suggested that we arrange it through the insurance company and provided him with my details via WhatsApp to arrange it. Photos were also taken of the dead chickens and the hole through which Whiskey crawled to add to the insurance file.”

“On Saturday evening we sat on the terrace with our friends. One of us thought he saw the chicken owner walking through his yard with a gun. A few minutes later the first shot rang out, which apparently didn’t hit anything. Not much later two more shots followed. At the last shot, Whiskey, who was walking in the back of the garden, started to howl. We saw that he was bleeding and went to inquire with the neighbor, but he said he had no weapon. Then we called the police.”

No surgery
The Balen-Dessel-Mol police drew up a report and confiscated the weapon. Whiskey was taken to the vet and seems to have little trouble. “The bullet is still in his body,” Daniel explains. “The vet said it is better not to operate for the time being. If Whiskey is in pain, the bullet should be removed. The bullet is close to a bone, but in a muscle. The American Akita is a sturdy dog breed. Fortunately, it all turned out quite well. I can’t bear to think that the bullet had hit one of the children.”

The owner of the chickens that were bitten to death would rather not respond. He said through a family member that the shots were not fired by him on Saturday evening.
