Mattarella: action in favor of refugees must be strengthened

«The international news constantly presents us with the dramatic topicality of the condition of refugees. International law and our Constitution provide for specific forms of protection for those millions of women, men and children forced by armed conflicts, discrimination, violations and abuses of their fundamental rights and freedoms, to flee their country in search of a present and of a better future “. Thus the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the occasion of the World Refugee Day. “Italy contributes responsibly to the moral and legal duty of solidarity, assistance and reception of refugees, ensuring full support for the United Nations High Commissioner and promoting an incisive and solidary commitment in the European fora in matters of migration and asylum”, he adds. he. “Action in favor of refugees must be strengthened now, in moments of accentuated crisis, according to that multilateral approach, of which Italy is a historic and convinced supporter”, observes the President of the Republic. «I would like to express the Republic’s gratitude to all those – personnel of the Public Administrations and operators of international protection and hospitality – who work to alleviate suffering and guarantee the access of refugees to basic services. A certificate of gratitude that also goes to the many fellow citizens who with great humanity and dedication have provided, especially in the weeks following the Russian attack on Ukraine, a fundamental contribution in assisting and welcoming refugees.
