Mexico: referendum to revoke the president, seats open

López Obrador said he will write on the card ‘Viva Zapata!’

(ANSA) – MEXICO CITY, APRIL 10 – Voting for the referendum to revoke the mandate of the President of the Republic, organized in Mexico by the National Electoral Institute (Ine), began today at 8 am (3 pm Italian time).

Almost 93 million eligible people will receive a ballot paper in about 57,000 open seats throughout the country on which the question can be answered: “” Do you agree that Andrés Manuel López Obrador, president of the United States of Mexico, has your mandate revoked due to loss of confidence, or do you continue to hold the presidency of the Republic until your mandate expires? “.

For a possible yes for the revocation to be valid, it will have to be expressed with the participation in the referendum of at least 40% of those entitled, even if López Obrador, said that whatever the participation rate, if the yes prevails, he will resign.

As for him, the head of state has anticipated that he will cancel the card that will be given to him by writing ‘Viva Zapata!’, Since the referendum today coincides with the 103rd anniversary of the assassination of the Mexican ‘Caudillo del Sur’, which took place in 1919.

On the eve of the appointment there was no lack of political controversy because the opposition accused Morena, the party that supports the government, of having collected the signatures, to transform the referendum into a sort of plebiscite in favor of the head of state, who in polls, he is trusted by 60% of Mexicans.

The INE has announced that there will be no exit polls, but that three to four hours after the polls close at 6 pm (tomorrow’s Italian 1), reliable official projections will be available.
