The southern Mexican state of Chiapas is home to the EZLN (Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional, German: Zapatista Army for National Liberation) is a left-wing political-military organization from Chiapas, Mexico, founded on November 17, 1983. The men and women worked underground to build the EZLN for many years until their uprising in 1994 brought them global attention. What is new about this organization and different from older Latin American guerrillas is that the political leadership takes precedence over the military leadership. This means that the military part of the EZLN is only allowed to act if the political leadership "green light" gives. In addition, the EZLN claims that all commanders have the support of the movement’s civilian base and can be replaced at any time. The weapons have been silent since mid-January 1994, but Zapatistas are still receiving military training and there are still armed units in the mountains of Chiapas. The founding of the "Councils of Good Government"here the EZLN has actually handed over a lot of authority to the civilian base of the movement.

Einzelne Gemeindeaktivist*innen wurden von den Behörden inhaftiert, andere von Auftragskillern ermordet.
Zwar hat die mexikanische Regierung die Präsenz von Armee und Nationalgarde in Chiapas verstärkt, aber nicht etwa, um die Sicherheit der Bevölkerung zu gewährleisten. Sondern um die zahlreichen Infrastrukturprojekte abzusichern, die in Chiapas und ganz Südmexiko unter oft fragwürdigen Umständen durchgesetzt werden.
