[New Tang Dynasty Beijing September 07, 2021]A phosphogypsum reservoir equivalent to 80 football fields leaked 2.5 kilometers away from the Yangtze River in Huanggang, Hubei, causing pollution to the surrounding water bodies. The total phosphorus concentration in the water body exceeded the standard by 3,474 times, and “milk water” would flow out when it rained.

On September 6, Lu Media reported that the annual output of solid waste phosphogypsum produced by phosphorous chemical enterprises in Hubei Province ranked first in the country.

As of the end of 2020, there are 37 phosphogypsum warehouses in Hubei, and the stock of phosphogypsum has reached 296 million tons. Among them, 18 are less than 5,000 meters away from the mainstream of the Yangtze River and Han River, and the nearest one is only 50 meters away from the Yangtze River.

According to the report, a milky-white water strip appeared near the spring eye of Daquandong, Meifu Community, Wuxue City, Huanggang City, Hubei Province. White powdery objects were attached to plants near the water. This is the Phosphorus of Hubei Xiangyun (Group) Chemical Co., Ltd. Caused by leakage in the gypsum warehouse. The phosphogypsum reservoir covers an area of over 800 acres, about 80 football fields, and is only 2.5 kilometers away from the Yangtze River.

Villagers in the Meifu community said that in the past it was possible to wash clothes, wash vegetables, and irrigate in the river, but not anymore. When there is heavy rain, all “milk water” flows out.

Another villager also said that there were fish and shrimps in Daquan Cave before, and the spring water can be drunk directly. Now it is a stinky water port.

The phosphogypsum reservoir near the Yangtze River pollutes the water body and harms the human body

It is reported that phosphogypsum is an industrial waste, containing undecomposed phosphate rock, free phosphoric acid, fluoride and other impurities, and a large amount of stacking will bring environmental safety risks.

After monitoring, the concentrations of ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus in Daquandong water samples exceeded the surface water level III standards by 26.1 times and 3,474 times, respectively. Monitoring of river water 500 meters downstream showed that the concentrations of ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus exceeded the surface water level III standard by 10.7 times and 574 times, respectively.

Experts point out that excessive total phosphorus concentration will not only cause eutrophication of the water body and make fish difficult to survive, but also cause various skin inflammations, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches and even poisoning.

According to the report, in the waters near Dongfeng Port in the lower reaches of Daquan Cave, many fish are on the verge of death, and some have turned upside down.

In addition, it is reported that some phosphorus chemical companies in Xiaogan, Hubei also have problems with direct discharge and secret discharge.

For example, the dyeing agent of Hubei Huangmailing Phosphorus Chemical Co., Ltd. leaked, and the bright red wastewater flows into the Dayan River and then into the Yunhe River. After monitoring, the sewage chromaticity (dilution factor) is as high as 128 times, and the concentration of total phosphorus, ammonia nitrogen and fluoride exceeds the level of surface water by 1,214, 55.7 and 322 times respectively.
