North Korea: floods, Kim Jong-un deploys the army

A thousand houses destroyed, over five thousand on the run

(ANSA) – ROME, AUGUST 08 – North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has ordered the army to intervene to help in areas recently hit by heavy rains and floods which, according to state media, have damaged over a thousand homes, forcing about five thousand people to flee. This was reported by the state agency Kcna cited by the BBC.

North Korea is on the brink after bad weather damage has added to a food crisis that is getting worse by the day. Agricultural lands are flooded, crops are lost, and Kim Jong-un said the country had to face a “tense” food situation in June. He added that the agricultural sector had failed to meet its grain targets due to last year’s typhoons and that much will depend on this year’s crop.

The Central Military Commission of the ruling Workers’ Party held a meeting on Thursday to discuss the situation. Kim did not attend the meeting, but party officials sent a message from him that the military should provide the necessary supplies in the most affected areas. (HANDLE).
