NEW YORK ALERT: ATTORNEY GENERAL AND CONGRESSMAN ISSUE CAUTION AGAINST REAL ESTATE SCAMS TARGETING DOMINICAN COMMUNITY
In a joint effort, Attorney General Letitia James and Congressman Adriano Espaillat have issued a consumer alert warning New Yorkers, particularly those in the Dominican community, about real estate scams. This comes in light of recent cases of fraud that have affected consumers in the city.
The alert was prompted by the accusations against Emmanuel Rivera Ledesma in the Dominican Republic. Rivera Ledesma, through his company InDisArq, defrauded nearly 150 people, including 24 New Yorkers, with fake property offers. Victims were tricked into investing in non-existent properties or properties that had been sold to multiple buyers.
Specifically targeting Dominicans living in the United States, Rivera Ledesma managed to collect millions of dollars in deposits through his fraudulent schemes. This alarming trend has prompted James and Espaillat to advise residents to take precautionary measures when considering real estate investments, especially outside the United States.
Recommendations from the Attorney General’s Office include conducting thorough checks, personally inspecting properties, and seeking legal advice before making any investments. Residents are also encouraged to report any suspected fraudulent activities to the Attorney General’s Office of Consumer Fraud for assistance.
“As public servants, we work tirelessly to ensure that residents do not fall victim to scams and other fraudulent practices,” Espaillat stated. The actions taken by James and Espaillat demonstrate their commitment to protecting consumers and seeking justice for victims of real estate scams.
For those who have been affected by fraud or suspect fraudulent activities, the Attorney General’s Office is available to provide support and investigate the cases accordingly. Stay vigilant and report any suspicious real estate dealings to prevent falling victim to fraud.
