A political earthquake shakes Pakistan. Liaqat Ali Chattha, a senior official in Rawalpindi, confessed to having helped manipulate the 2024 elections, overturning the results in 13 seats of the National Assembly. Chattha said he, along with other officials including the head of the Election Commission and a chief judge, had “turned losers into winners” by altering the votes of 70,000 voters. He said he is “deeply involved in serious crimes” and that “stabbing the country in the back” does not allow him to sleep.
The confession sparked protests in several cities in Pakistan. Thousands of people took to the streets to denounce electoral fraud and demand a new vote. The PMLN, the party vying to form the government, described Chattha’s actions as a “brazen move” and a “publicity tactic”. The PTI, the party of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, instead called the confession “incriminating” and called for a fair investigation.
Chattha’s confession cast a shadow of uncertainty over Pakistan’s future. The elections, already contested by many, are now invalidated by this admission of fraud. The situation in Pakistan remains tense and uncertain. Chattha’s confession opened a Pandora’s box and raised questions about the legitimacy of the elections. The future of the country will depend on how the authorities manage this political crisis.
