Fujimori ‘acknowledges’ the result after allegations of fraud

(ANSA) – LIMA, 19 JUL – The radical left candidate Pedro Castillo was proclaimed the winner of the presidential elections in Peru last night, more than a month after the second round between him and the right-wing populist candidate Keiko Fujimori.

“I proclaim José Pedro Castillo Terrones president of the Republic,” said the president of the National Electoral Jury (JNE), Jorge Luis Salas, in a short virtual ceremony.

The electoral authority responsible for examining the appeals thus confirmed the results provided a few weeks ago by the National Office for Electoral Processes (Onpe). At the end of the ballot of 100% of the votes, the NPO had declared Castillo, 51, the winner with 50.12% of the votes, against 49.87% of rival Fujimori, 46. According to the results validated by JNE, Castillo wins with 44,263 votes in front of the daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000). Castillo will take office on July 28, the day the term of the interim president Francisco Sagasti expires.

Fujimori, who at the beginning of July had made it clear that he did not want to recognize his opponent’s victory, yesterday turned around during a press conference: “I announce that by fulfilling my commitments, my commitment to all Peruvians, the (Nobel Prize ) Mario Vargas Llosa and the international community, I will acknowledge the results, because that is what the law and the Constitution that I have sworn to defend require “.
