Petro to governor of Antioquia

President Gustavo Petro Urrego asked the governor of Antioquia, Andrés Julián Rendón, to suspend the initiative known as “Cow through the roads of Antioquia”, which seeks to collect donations of one million pesos per person to finance road projects in the department.

Through his account on a social network, the Head of State expressed his concern for this activity and alerted the governor about the risk that the funds received could be infiltrated by money from drug trafficking.

«I ask the governor of Antioquia to suspend the account of ‘the cow’unnecessary for roads, given that it can be infiltrated by dirty money from drug trafficking incorporated into donations,” wrote President Petro.

Instead of this controversial collection of funds, the president proposed other alternatives to obtain the necessary resources to complete the road projects in Antioquia..

«I rather propose to implement, with the national government, the collection of valuation for works already carried out. and allocate a percentage of that appreciation to the roads of Antioquia. In any case, the national government will advance the collection process for valuation, avoiding punishing sectors of the Antioquian population with low payment capacity,” added the president.

The valuation charge, a recurring proposal during President Petro’s mandate, consists of taxing property owners who benefit from infrastructure projects that increase the value of their properties.

This request from the president has generated an intense debate in the department of Antioquia, where some voices have expressed their support for the “Cow along the tracks” initiative, while others support the proposal to charge for valuation.
