Pneumology of Feltre, thoracic endoscopy enhanced

With the new endoscopic column it will be possible to diagnose lung cancer, a disease that sees 150 new cases a year in the province

The new endoscopic column is also operational in Feltre. In fact, in these months of 2022, an enhancement of Thoracic Endoscopy (Interventional Pneumology) took place in the Pneumology of Feltre, thanks to the acquisition of a new videobronchoscopic instrumentation and a latest generation thoracic endoscopy system, as already installed in the Pneumology of Belluno the last few days.

«The ultrasound endoscopy is particularly important for the diagnosis of the ilo-mediastinal lymphadenopathies», explains Stefano Calabro, director of the Pneumology of Santa Maria del Prato, «In the province of Belluno about 150 cases of lung cancer are expected annually. This instrumentation increases the possibility of rapidly obtaining the diagnosis of lung cancer and of carrying out an adequate preliminary evaluation of the individual case. This is important to set the correct treatment of the tumor, also from the perspective of personalized medicine, which aims to identify the differences between individuals and define the therapy at the level of the individual patient “. After being converted into the Covid-19 area to respond adequately to the emergency state determined by the pandemic, the Feltre department is organizing a plan for the resumption of activities.

In 2022, particular attention will be paid to the activity relating to respiratory disorders in sleep. These are frequently associated with an altered quality of sleep, reduced quality of life and neurocognitive functions. The most common form is the Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS), which can also cause significant cardiac, vascular and metabolic sequelae. In this field, a collaboration between Pneumology and Otorhinolaryngology (Orl) is active in Feltre.

The Pneumology of Feltre has already been identified as a regional center authorized to prescribe home treatment with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

Inside the unit there is a sleep laboratory with a permanent polysomnograph and instrumentation for the diagnosis and therapy of sleep-related pathologies; the assessment of which, in most cases, is however performed on an outpatient basis. “In this perspective, the Pneumology of Feltre intends to move also in other areas of the diseases of the respiratory system, organizationally continuing in the mutual collaboration with the Pneumology of Belluno.” finally comments the director Stefano Calabro.
