What should I do? This was the central question posed by Prime Minister Mustafa al Kadhimi in his recent meeting with representatives of seven Shiite political organizations. At the urgently convened summit, the premier expressed regret for the staggering number of activists killed in front of their homes.
According to one of the representatives present, the answer would have been “Go ahead!”, Essentially a green light to identify and punish the killers. The question now is: will it? And above all, will they really let him do it? The number of murders has reached 73 since the beginning of the protests, on 25 October 2019, but activists predict an exponential increase in attacks as the electoral deadline, scheduled for next 10 October, approaches. The assassination of the activist Ihab al Wazni on May 8th was a clear example of what the occult plans are underway. As usual, no party has claimed responsibility for the operation.
After the urgent meeting with the seven main parties, it is still unclear whether Al Kadhimi will be able to arrest the killers. The premier tried it a few days ago in the city of Basra, where on Wednesday night a team of security agents raided the home of one of the militiamen who, according to the investigations carried out, was found to be responsible for the killings of activists in the city. But the killer escaped before the raid, and soon after the Asa’ib al Haq militia surrounded the intelligence headquarters, opening fire on the offices. No one was injured in the clash, but the incident was a prime example of what could happen if Al Kadhimi actually makes arrests.
