President Gustavo Petro begins his 2024 international tour

Petro will attend the inauguration of Bernardo Arévalo de León and will later participate in the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

This Sunday, President Gustavo Petro will embark on his first international tour of the year, beginning with his presence at the inauguration of the new president of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo de León. Accompanied by Foreign Minister Álvaro Leyva, Petro will show support for the Guatemalan president, who has denounced attempts at a “coup d’état” by the local Prosecutor’s Office to prevent his inauguration.

Through his X account, formerly Twitter, the head of state wrote: “Guatemala is experiencing a crisis of its democracy because the forces linked to drug trafficking and corruption do not want the triumph of the Guatemalan people in the elections. “Colombia demands that the popular mandate be respected and that the elected president Bernardo Arévalo takes office.”

Later, President Petro will head to Davos, Switzerland, where he will participate in the World Economic Forum. Accompanied by the Ministers of the Environment, Susana Muhammad; Commerce, Germán Umaña, and Minas, Andrés Camacho, Petro will address crucial issues, such as the climate crisis and the protection of the Amazon.

The president’s agenda in Davos includes several interventions. On Tuesday he will be part of a discussion called “Finding a balance for the Amazon”, in which the president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Ilan Goldfajn, will also participate.

On Wednesday he will be with the Dominican Vice President, Raquel Peña, in a colloquium about the moment in Latin America. Although the attendance of Daniel Noboa, president of Ecuador, was expected, the security situation in that country could change the initial plans.
