The German Weather Service (DWD) expects a significant risk of ice from Wednesday afternoon. Clouds are expected to move in from the southwest on Wednesday, followed by snowfall later. In the southern parts of the country, this quickly turns into “freezing rain with considerable potential for black ice.”
Meteorologist Florian Engelmann warned: “It will be a dangerous weather situation for drivers and pedestrians.” Weather experts expect snowfall before and after the rain. In the lowlands, especially in the Leipzig area, up to 15 centimeters could fall. By the weekend the precipitation should ease and the sun should appear more.
Severe weather warning for Vogtland and Erzgebirgskreis
The DWD has issued a severe weather warning for black ice for the Vogtlandkreis and the Erzgebirgskreis. Between Wednesday 1 p.m. and Thursday 3 a.m. there is a danger to life and limb due to suddenly freezing moisture or suddenly freezing rain.
Restrictions on rail and air traffic
The maximum temperatures are 0 to 2 degrees Celsius, in the mountains it is -4 to 0 degrees. There will be a light to moderate wind from the south.
The snowfall – initially with rain – is expected to continue until early Thursday. At Dresden and Leipzig airports, flights to Frankfurt/Main and Munich were canceled for Wednesday. Restrictions are also to be expected in rail traffic. The tickets of travelers who postpone their journey on Wednesday due to the risk of severe weather remain valid. In addition, the train connection was generally lifted.
Calm weather again on Tuesday
On Tuesday the winter weather initially calmed down after the overnight and morning rainfall. The last snow showers fell until midday. The temperatures reached values of 0 to 2 degrees Celsius, in the mountains -5 to 0 degrees.
