Beijing Welcomes Unexpected Snowfall at the Beginning of the Dragon Boat Festival

On February 20, Beijing was surprised by the arrival of the first snowfall of the Year of the Dragon, bringing with it a winter wonderland but also some potential hazards.

The snowfall covered the entire Jiangshuihe Village, located at the foot of Lingshan Mountain, with temperatures plummeting to minus 10 degrees Celsius. The beautiful scenes were captured by local residents, who shared images of the snow-covered streets and buildings illuminated by the soft glow of streetlights.

Despite the picturesque scenery, the Municipal Meteorological Observatory issued a blue warning signal for heavy snowfall, as well as a yellow warning signal for road icing and a blue warning signal for a cold wave. It is advised that everyone pays attention to safety when traveling, as some road sections may be icy.

The unexpected snowfall was influenced by strong cold air, resulting in an overcast sky and significantly suppressed temperatures. The highest daytime temperature recorded was only -1.3°C. Snowfall was heavier in the mountainous areas during the day and continued to intensify in the urban areas as night fell.

The Meteorological Observatory reported that moderate snowfall had occurred across the city, with an average snowfall of 2.7 mm and a maximum hourly snowfall intensity of 2.4 mm in some areas. The snowy weather was attributed to the high-altitude trough and abundant water vapor in the bottom layer, causing the snowfall to be more significant.

Further snowfall is expected until the morning of February 21, with light to moderate snow and possibly heavy snow in the western and southern parts of Beijing. The meteorological department has issued warnings for slippery roads and advised the public to take precautions, especially during peak travel times.
