Tax Filing Deadlines Extended in Several States Due to Holidays and Natural Disasters
As the April 15 deadline for filing tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) approached, some states have made exceptions due to holidays and natural disasters, extending the deadline for compliance.
In Maine and Massachusetts, where Patriot Day and Emancipation Day are celebrated on April 15 and 16 respectively, taxpayers have until April 17, 2024, to file their tax returns.
Additionally, several states have experienced natural disasters that have led to changes in their tax filing deadlines. Due to storms and landslides in November 2023, Alaska’s new tax filing deadline is July 15, 2024. While California and Connecticut have extended their deadline to June 17, 2024, following severe storms and flooding in January 2024.
Other states affected by natural disasters have also adjusted their tax filing deadlines. Hawaii’s deadline is now August 7, 2024, following wildfires in August 2023. Michigan and Rhode Island have set their deadlines to June 17, 2024, due to the effects of storms, tornadoes, and floods in August 2023 and September 10, 2023, respectively. Similarly, Tennessee’s deadline is also June 17, 2024, because of storms and tornadoes in December 2023.
West Virginia has extended its deadline following severe storms, flooding, and landslides in August 2023. Additionally, nine other states in the country have filing deadlines later than those established by the IRS.
These states include Delaware (April 30, 2024), Hawaii (April 22), Iowa (April 30), Louisiana (May 15), Maine (April 17, unless in a declared disaster area), Massachusetts (April 17), New Mexico (April 30 if filed electronically, April 15 otherwise), Oklahoma (April 20 if filed electronically, April 15 otherwise), and Virginia (May 1, 2024).
Taxpayers in these states should take note of the extended deadlines and ensure compliance to avoid any penalties or late fees.
