Schöning was 75 years old. He had been a member of the district council since 1989, having come to Tübingen to study at the age of 20, and a Tübingen city councilor since 1994.
The FDP district association describes it in an obituary on his homepage as a “great liberal personality” and “face of the Tübingen FDP”. Schöning was a member of the state parliament from 1992 to 1996 and worked as a parliamentary advisor for budget and finance, economics, fundamental political issues and strategy.
