The remains of the fireplace among the garbage: flames in the Bellunum collection truck

Beginning of fire Saturday morning in the plastic compactor: the operator notices it thanks to the cameras in the box

BELLUNO. Plastic in smoke in the Bellunum truck. The emptying of a waste bell turns into a start of fire. It happened yesterday, during the normal round to empty the bells.

It is 9.20 am, the Bellunum truck that collects the plastic is in via Col Cavalier. The operator immediately realizes that something is wrong: not only because smoke comes out of the box, but also because there are cameras inside. They resume the waste for safety reasons, explains the sole director of the company, Davide Lucicesare later. Something may end up in the bells that shouldn’t be there, hence the installation of the devices.

Given the flames, the operator immediately stops the vehicle and gives the alarm, also managing to detach the roll-off compactor from the tractor. The firefighters, arrived with a fire engine and a tanker, extinguish the contents of the container with foam. The vehicle is emptied of waste in the Bellunum headquarters, which is located in Marisiga. When every small outbreak is extinguished, the caisson is also reclaimed, which does not report any damage. No problem even with the engine, the operator from Bellunum unharmed.

From society it is assumed that the fire was caused by the still hot ash, or embers, improperly thrown into the plastic bell. “It is likely that the fire broke out because opening the bell for emptying there was a reaction with oxygen,” explains Lucicesare. “Before throwing the ash, which does not go into the plastic but into the wet, you must always check that it is completely extinguished”. Otherwise, the risk is that the container will catch fire. Or, like this time, the compactor truck.
