Chinese Foreign Ministry Strongly Opposes US “Non-Discrimination against Taiwan Act”

In a regular press conference held on January 16th, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning expressed strong opposition to the recently passed “Non-Discrimination against Taiwan Act” by the US House of Representatives. The bill requires the US Treasury Secretary to use US influence in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to support Taiwan’s joining the organization.

Mao Ning stated that the bill grossly interferes in China’s internal affairs and attempts to create “two Chinas” and “one China, one Taiwan.” China is strongly dissatisfied with this and has lodged stern representations with the United States.

The spokesperson emphasized that Taiwan has no basis, reason, or right to participate in the United Nations and other international organizations that only sovereign states can participate in. He referred to the 1971 United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758, which clearly recognizes the representatives of the government of the People’s Republic of China as China’s only legitimate representatives in the United Nations.

Mao Ning also pointed out that for more than half a century, specialized agencies of the United Nations, including the International Monetary Fund, and other international and regional organizations have adhered to this resolution. Therefore, any issues regarding Taiwan’s participation in international organization activities must be resolved under the one-China principle.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry called on the United States to recognize the high sensitivity of the Taiwan issue, immediately stop using the Taiwan issue to interfere in China’s internal affairs, and to stop sending wrong signals to “Taiwan independence” forces. They also urged the US to stop undermining Sino-US relations and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
